While much has been said about the economic, health, and intellectual impact of one decision or another, not much has been said about the function of schools from a sociological perspective. Beyond the obvious of reading, writing, and arithmetic, what is the point of schooling?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-109851 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/uitac.com\/inthenewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2020\/07\/pexels-yankrukov-8613089-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"An elementary school teacher reading to children in class.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uitac.com\/inthenewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2020\/07\/pexels-yankrukov-8613089-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uitac.com\/inthenewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2020\/07\/pexels-yankrukov-8613089-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/uitac.com\/inthenewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2020\/07\/pexels-yankrukov-8613089-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/uitac.com\/inthenewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2020\/07\/pexels-yankrukov-8613089-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/uitac.com\/inthenewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2020\/07\/pexels-yankrukov-8613089-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Broadly speaking, <strong>education<\/strong> is <em>the transmission of knowledge, skills, values, and beliefs from one group to another.<\/em> Under the rubric of education, we have <strong>schooling<\/strong>, <em>the formal educational process that takes place in institutions such as schools and centers of learning.<\/em> Arguably, all the talk we hear in the news about parents struggling to teach their kids isn\u2019t about educating them as much as it is about schooling them. Parents educate their kids all the time about things like safely crossing the street or being kind to strangers. On the other hand, most parents are not involved in the day-to-day process of schooling their kids in history, math, or science beyond the occasional help with homework. Typically, this transmission of knowledge happens in the classroom under the tutelage of dedicated teachers, aides, and administrators. In the early stages of the pandemic, parents <a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/parents\/some-parents-refuse-remote-learning-will-there-be-consequences-t178188\">were quickly overwhelmed by <\/a>attempting to take over their children\u2019s schooling in addition to their own professional work responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p>However, schooling is more than ABC\u2019s and 123\u2019s. There is also a <strong>hidden curriculum<\/strong> made up of <em>lessons that are not associated with the formal educational curriculum<\/em>. This includes things that aren\u2019t explicitly taught in the classroom but, instead, learned through observation and experience. For example, knowing the etiquette and structure of a classroom or how to engage with teachers differently than you would with family or friends. The things students \u201cpick up\u201d in the context of the classroom are valuable lessons that serve them throughout their lives.<\/p>\n<p>Sociologically speaking, schooling provides kids with important <strong>secondary group<\/strong> connections that<em> are large-scale, impersonal, task-focused, and time-limited associations<\/em>. It also gives them <strong>primary group<\/strong> relationships that are small-scale, intimate, face-to-face, long-lasting associations. Typically referred to as <strong>peer groups<\/strong>, these are <em>social groups consisting of members with common interests, social rank, and similar ages<\/em>. How will extended periods of remote learning affect kids\u2019 social development? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/family\/archive\/2020\/06\/how-quarantine-will-affect-kids-social-development\/613381\/\">Experts speculate<\/a>, but only time will tell how this generation of K-12<sup>th<\/sup> graders will be impacted by the social disruptions they are now experiencing.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-109853 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/uitac.com\/inthenewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2020\/07\/pexels-julia-m-cameron-4144222-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"A young student sitting at a desktop computer during virtual class.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uitac.com\/inthenewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2020\/07\/pexels-julia-m-cameron-4144222-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uitac.com\/inthenewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2020\/07\/pexels-julia-m-cameron-4144222-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/uitac.com\/inthenewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2020\/07\/pexels-julia-m-cameron-4144222-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/uitac.com\/inthenewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2020\/07\/pexels-julia-m-cameron-4144222-1536x1025.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/uitac.com\/inthenewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2020\/07\/pexels-julia-m-cameron-4144222-2048x1367.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With ongoing concerns over rising COVID-19 numbers, more and more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/parents-are-opting-home-school-their-children-due-covid-19-n1232739\">parents are choosing to homeschool their kids in the fall<\/a>. Homeschooling is different from remote learning in that with the former, the parent and the child take the lead in guiding the education. By comparison, remote learning has the school teacher guide the lesson for their class of students through a computer portal. Among the advantages of homeschooling is that it would cut through the <strong>teacher expectancy effect<\/strong>, reducing the likelihood that <em>teachers\u2019 perceptions of students have an effect on their academic achievement.<\/em> Nevertheless, the reality is that not every parent has the time, skill, or patience needed to homeschool their kids. In the upcoming weeks, those parents will face a daunting choice: send their kid back to school and risk catching the coronavirus, or plod along with a remote learning approach that may not serve the learning needs of their children.
