\"A<\/p>\n

Nobody does \u201cpomp and circumstance\u201d like the British. The life and death of Queen Elizabeth II<\/a> after 70 years on the throne has brought this fact into stark relief. The process leading up to the Queen\u2019s state funeral<\/a> and the accession for now King Charles III<\/a>\u00a0included royal guards, horses, cannons, bagpipes, and palaces. As children, we may have pretended to be princes or princesses, but very few people in the world undergo the level of socialization<\/strong> necessary to learn the appropriate attitudes and behaviors within a culture<\/em> of royalty. By using sociology to reflect on the passing of Queen Elizabeth, we can gain insights into her and how monarchy is viewed on the world stage.<\/p>\n

One of the praises that have been pouring in for Queen Elizabeth is that while she was the monarch, she never voiced her personal opinion about political events. In fact, under the system of constitutional monarchy<\/strong>, a system of government in which a monarch is the Head of State and governed by a parliament<\/em>, she wasn\u2019t actually allowed to say much about such topics. Even though she met with the British Prime Minister weekly and received \u201cred boxes<\/a>\u201d containing government briefing papers daily, she never publicly stated her views. Queen Elizabeth kept a clear distinction between her front stage<\/strong>, a person\u2019s public life that they reveal to the world, and her back stage<\/strong>, a person\u2019s private world that they choose not to reveal<\/em>. Unlike many of the younger members of the royal family, she was adept at impression management<\/strong>, an effort to control the impression others have of us<\/em>, and the embodiment of the motto \u201cKeep Calm and Carry On.\u201d<\/p>\n

One interesting feature of Queen Elizabeth\u2019s interaction with the public had to do with the rules of etiquette. Among other things, British subjects were supposed to bow or curtsey to her, refrain from speaking to her until spoken to, and stop eating when she finished, regardless of whether they were still hungry<\/a>. Of particular sociological interest was the amount of space that was expected to be maintained<\/em> between her and others. Quite simply, the rule was \u201cDo not touch the Queen!\u201d Truthfully, this distance zone<\/strong> rule was violated from time to time over the years. The most notable example was in 2009 when U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama put her arm around the Queen<\/a>. While the British tabloids were aghast, the Queen let it be known that the gesture was warmly received.<\/a><\/p>\n

\"Prince<\/p>\n

Queen Elizabeth\u2019s rise to the throne was unexpected because the death of her father, King George IV,<\/a> occurred while she was on tour in Kenya. By comparison, the world has witnessed the Queen\u2019s decline since the 2021 death of her husband Prince Philip<\/a>. This meant that her heir, the newly crowned King Charles III, was afforded the opportunity for anticipatory socialization<\/strong>, the process of learning different behaviors or activities in an effort to aspire to group membership<\/em>. This has included stepping in for the Queen at events such as the opening of Parliament<\/a> and the Highland Games<\/a>. What group is Charles aspiring to be a member of, you ask? The ultra-exclusive club of sitting kings. <\/em><\/p>\n

The club of kings and queens of Europe is a peer group<\/strong>, a<\/em> social group consisting of members with common interests, social rank, and similar ages<\/em>. Many of the royals are not only peers but also descendants of Britain\u2019s Queen Victoria (1819-1901)<\/a>, who formed marriage alliances that eventually led to current monarchs being cousins to Queen Elizabeth and King Charles III. This list includes but is not limited to Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, King Baudouin of Belgium, King Juan Carlos of Spain, King Harald of Norway, King Carl XVI Gustav of Sweden, and Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg.<\/p>\n

\"Prince<\/p>\n

While the praise of Queen Elizabeth has been effusive, not all the attention has been good. Critics of the monarchy abound<\/a>. Many of the comments harken back to the horrendous treatment of people by British colonizers<\/a>. Even more recently, the sexual assault allegations against the Queen\u2019s son, Prince Andrew,<\/a> have some wondering why he isn\u2019t in a prison or total institution<\/strong>, an isolated group whose goal is to control every aspect of its member\u2019s lives<\/em>. Though some may deflect these issues with the refrain of \u201cthat was then, this is now,\u201d it is easy to be dismissive when it is not your personal trouble or your society\u2019s public issue.<\/p>\n

The death of Queen Elizabeth II draws to a close the second Elizabethan era. How she and the monarchy are viewed through the lens of history will be analyzed by pundits and the public in the days and months ahead. In the process, sociology will be there to help understand and explain the social relationships, social institutions, and societies involved.<\/p>\n
