Based on their count,\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/graphics\/investigations\/police-shootings-database\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">8,166 people of various races and ethnicities have been killed since 2015. Over 1,000 were shot in 2022 alone.<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><em> The Post<\/em> isn\u2019t the only organization to note these disturbing figures. Even the \u201cAnadolu Agency,\u201d an arm of the Turkish government, has kept <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/americas\/timeline-of-black-americans-killed-by-police-2014-2022\/2596913\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a timeline of the African Americans killed by police since 2014<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. At this point, we are all very familiar with their names. They include but are not limited to Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, Philando Castile, Breanna Taylor, and George Floyd. Sadly, we must add\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/article\/tyre-nichols-memphis-police-dead.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Tyre Nichols to the list<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Nichols, a Black motorist, was brutally beaten by members of the Memphis Police Department on January 10, 2023. While the details of his killing are still under investigation, the country grapples with the implications of another senseless death. From a sociological perspective, it is worth considering whether these deaths represent more than just issues of bad policing. Do they speak to broader cultural issues at play in the United States? Typically, when we think about culture, we often think of it in terms of the fun aspects of society. Examples include the language people speak, the food they eat, their style of dress, and their religious beliefs. In reality, culture is so much more than that. <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Material culture<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0consists of<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the physical artifacts that represent components of society.<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Firearms, pepper spray, tasers, batons, body cameras, handcuffs, combat gear, armored vehicles, and even grenade launchers are all part of the material culture of police departments across the United States. Many people have questioned whether <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/providing-police-military-gear-reduce-crime-protect-officers\/story?id=74518923\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">military-grade weaponry in the hands of local police is doing more harm than good<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Arguably, treating fellow citizens like enemy combatants enhances an \u201cus against them\u201d mentality in communities nationwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Material culture has its nonmaterial counterpart. <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Nonmaterial culture<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0comprises the\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">ideas and symbols that represent components of society.<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0This includes our language, customs, philosophies, morals, and knowledge. In essence, what we say to each other, how we treat each other, and the beliefs that undergird our existence. Ideally, these laws encourage group conformity and help maintain social stability. But what happens if the people tasked to enforce the laws violate them?\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ideal culture<\/span><\/strong>,<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the ideals and values that a society professes to believe,\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">would say that the \u201cthin blue line\u201d so often associated with policing is nothing more than a reference to support for law enforcement. But as we have seen in the countless cases of citizens getting killed in the act of just being alive, law enforcement doesn\u2019t always live up to ideal culture. <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Real culture<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the actual behavior of members of society<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, is not so cut and dry. Sometimes, law enforcement uses that \u201cthin blue line\u201d to protect their own, even when they are known to have done wrong. This behavior further emphasizes the notion mentioned above of us versus them. Regardless of race or ethnicity, real culture tells us that sometimes police officers are wrong. But how does one police the police?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong>Social<\/strong><b> facts<\/b><\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0are\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the social patterns that are external to individuals and greatly influence our way of thinking and behaving in the society<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. As it stands, the social facts of our society point to a need to look not just at the victims of police violence but also at the police themselves.
