It exists because humans agree that it exists. Gender, race, marriage, and families are socially constructed. For example,\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">gender<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the socially learned expectations and behaviors associated with being male or female<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, is a social construct as it varies from society to society and can change over time. Let\u2019s think of gender in the context of history and analyze the variations and changes. Historically, in some cultures, women were the property of men. This is an extreme and awful form of <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">gender stratification<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the unequal access and distribution of wealth, power, and privilege between women and men<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. You may be saying, \u201cThat was hundreds of years ago.\u201d You are correct, but this systemic inequality remains with us today in many cultures because of extreme patriarchal laws and norms. In \u201c<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.globalcitizen.org\/en\/content\/best-worst-countries-for-women-2018-list-ranking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Closing the Gender Gap: The 10 Best and Worst Countries for Women<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,\u201d Yemen, Pakistan, and Iraq top the list of worst countries concerning gender stratification. Even in the U.S., \u201c<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.texasmonthly.com\/being-texan\/until-1968-married-texas-woman-couldnt-own-property-start-business-without-husbands-permission-dallas-attorney-changed-that\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Until 1968, A Married Texas Women Could Not Own Property or Start a Business Without Her Husband\u2019s Permission<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.\u201d Today, this law seems so archaic and unbelievable. At the time, it seemed \u201cnormal\u201d because the <\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">gender norms<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">behaviors or traits that society attributes to a particular sex<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0were socially learned and passed from generation to generation. Fortunately, women have gained wealth, power, and privilege in many countries, and positive systemic changes have occurred in laws and norms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-110239 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/uitac.com\/inthenewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2023\/03\/pexels-rdne-8674838-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"A female priest.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uitac.com\/inthenewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2023\/03\/pexels-rdne-8674838-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uitac.com\/inthenewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2023\/03\/pexels-rdne-8674838-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/uitac.com\/inthenewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2023\/03\/pexels-rdne-8674838-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/uitac.com\/inthenewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2023\/03\/pexels-rdne-8674838-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/uitac.com\/inthenewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2023\/03\/pexels-rdne-8674838-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">World religions are instrumental in socially constructing the concept of gender. A prime example, as an illustration, is\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">gender roles<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">behaviors or traits that society attributes to a particular sex<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. The Catholic church does not allow women to be priests. This calling or vocation is reserved only for men. Women must opt for a vocation as a nun or serve as a lay contributor to their diocese, although there are 250 \u201c<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/a\/female-priests-secretly-celebrating-catholic-masses-\/6882455.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Female \u2018Priests\u2019 Secretly Celebrating Mass<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201d worldwide. These women risk excommunication from the Catholic Church.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-110237 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/uitac.com\/inthenewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2023\/03\/church-2145052_1920-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Church building and steeple against a sunset.\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uitac.com\/inthenewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2023\/03\/church-2145052_1920-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/uitac.com\/inthenewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2023\/03\/church-2145052_1920-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/uitac.com\/inthenewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2023\/03\/church-2145052_1920-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/uitac.com\/inthenewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2023\/03\/church-2145052_1920.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The United Methodist Church is currently socially constructing the concepts of gender and<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0sexuality<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">an individual\u2019s experience and expression as a sexual being<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. This is evident in \u201c<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/news\/2023\/january\/umc-churches-leave-global-methodist-denomination-schism.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">United Methodist Lose 1,800 Churches in Split Over LGBT Stance<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.\u201d Differences over same-sex marriage and the ordination of LGBT clergy have led to a split among members of churches. The Presbyterian church denomination went through an identical split a decade ago <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-presbyterian-gay\/presbyterian-group-breaks-away-over-gay-clergy-idUSTRE80I2CD20120119\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">over gay clergy<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. At the same time (2012), Pope Benedict said that gay marriage was one of several threats to the traditional family that undermined \u201c<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/news\/gay-marriage-threat-humanitys-future-pope-wbna45930315\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the future of humanity itself<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.\u201d A statement such as this has a tremendous impact on the social construction of gender and sexuality, as there are over a billion Catholics around the globe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In summary, there is a historical legacy of gender stratification and patriarchy that continues to contribute to the social construction of gender. Religion also weighs heavily on how we define gender and sexuality.
