Interested in learning about beauty standards in light of the summer blockbuster <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barbie<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? Sociology can help. How about studying how AI technology impacts family dynamics in wealthy versus poor countries? Yes, sociology can do that, too. Sociology can assist in understanding such a wide range of topics because, on some level, everything is about relationships in society, and <strong>sociology<\/strong> is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the scientific study of social relationships, institutions, and societies.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> To further illustrate the power of sociology, let\u2019s turn our attention to a more serious issue: the plight of a Muslim ethnic group known as the Rohingya. In the end, we will see that sociology can be used to analyze and better understand the experience of people, even in the most desperate of circumstances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-90924 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/sociologicalyou.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Myanmar_in_its_region_labels.svg-1-300x172.png\" alt=\"A map showing the location of Myanmar.\" width=\"300\" height=\"172\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rohingya are a stateless people. In other words, they don\u2019t have a country to call home. While formally, most of their population lived in Myanmar, in 2017, military-sponsored attacks drove them out. The root causes of this ethnic conflict are the government-instituted <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfr.org\/backgrounder\/rohingya-crisis#:~:text=Discriminatory%20policies%20of%20Myanmar\\'s%20government,Indonesia%2C%20Malaysia%2C%20and%20Thailand.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">discriminatory policies that have been imposed by the nation\u2019s ruling Buddhist majority<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since the 1970s. These include, but are not limited to, restrictions on Rohingya education, employment, marriage, and family planning. Rohingya couples in some parts of Myanmar are even prohibited from having more than two children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-90925 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/sociologicalyou.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Rohingya_displaced_Muslims_09-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"A group of people in Myanmar.\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unrefugees.org\/news\/rohingya-refugee-crisis-explained\/#RohingyainBangladesh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UN Refugee Agency estimates that 900,000 Rohingya live in refugee camps in Bangladesh<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 Recently, it was reported that up to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-66470497\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50 Rohingya died when their boat sank<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as they attempted to cross the Andaman Sea to reach Malaysia. Sadly, their deaths are not an isolated incident. In 2022 alone, it was estimated that at least <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2023\/1\/17\/alarming-rise-in-rohingya-lost-at-sea-in-2022-un-says\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">348 Rohingya died at sea trying to flee<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the military crackdown in Myanmar. According to experts, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalcitizen.org\/es\/content\/recognizing-the-rohingya-and-their-horrifying-pers\/#:~:text=Rohingyas%20are%20often%20called%20the,the%20world%20is%20not%20watching.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Rohingya are the most persecuted minority group in the world.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Studying the experience of the Rohingya from a <strong>sociological perspective<\/strong> would involve <em>the process of understanding and explaining how individuals and groups interact within society<\/em>. This would require looking at the social interactions and social factors that influenced not only them but also the groups that persecute them. This includes examining what their life was like in Myanmar before 2017. What political, social, cultural, or economic factors precipitated the attacks in 2017? Sadly, their experience was the culmination of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldvision.org\/refugees-news-stories\/rohingya-refugees-bangladesh-facts#:~:text=The%20Rohingya%20refugee%20crisis%20is,to%20flee%20to%20nearby%20Bangladesh.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">long history of violence and discrimination<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-90922\" src=\"https:\/\/sociologicalyou.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/800px-Rohingya_Camps_in_Coxs_Bazar_Bangladesh-300x103.jpg\" alt=\"Rohingya camps in Bangladesh.\" width=\"553\" height=\"190\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An important part of analyzing the Rohingya experience would entail <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">considering the details of their lives in the context of larger social structures as opposed to merely personal choices or personal troubles.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Known as the <strong>sociological imagination<\/strong>, this teaches us that the experiences of the Rohingya cannot be understood outside the context of the larger society. While a single Rohingya <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experiencing matters at the individual level<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could be said to have <strong>personal troubles<\/strong>, the sheer magnitude of the crises experienced by Rohingya men, women, and children tells us that this must be viewed as a <strong>public issue<\/strong> because it <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impacts society as a whole.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> By looking at the big picture, one sees that the Rohingya\u2019s experience easily qualifies as a <strong>social problem<\/strong> because it involves <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">societal conditions that harm segments of society<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The social problem label is not only true for them but also for the Bangladeshi society that finds itself in the middle of a massive refugee crisis. In March 2023, the problem got worse when a fire raced through the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/mar\/06\/rohingya-refugee-camp-fire-bangladesh-coxs-bazar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cox\u2019s Bazar refugee camp, leaving 12,000 homeless<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> . . . again.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-90923\" src=\"https:\/\/sociologicalyou.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/March_2021_Rohingya_refugee-camp_fire-300x141.jpg\" alt=\"A fire at a Rohingya concentration camp.\" width=\"466\" height=\"219\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the end, using sociology to find solutions for the Rohingya involves not only looking at <\/span><b>subjective concerns <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people\u2019s feelings about the problem<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but also looking at the <\/span><b>objective conditions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scope of the problem.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In other words, it is not just about our gut reaction to what we have read but rather a scientific understanding of what is happening. <strong>Applied sociology<\/strong> in the form of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sociological theory, research, and methodologies<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can offer solutions to those in crisis.
