In the realm of sociology, they are crucial lenses through which we understand human experiences, especially in contexts of conflict. Both play a significant role in how individuals are treated, how resources are allocated, how they experience conflict and displacement, and health disparities.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:278}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When groups with different racial or ethnic identities come into conflict, it can lead to <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">discrimination<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">unfair or differential treatment of individuals and groups based on race and ethnicity<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. This discrimination can range from personal biases to larger systemic issues like unfair laws or practices. As conflicts worsen, this discrimination can evolve into what is known as institutional racism.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:278}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Medical Apartheid and Genocide<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:278}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When a <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">majority group<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a group that controls the economic, social, and political power and resources<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, utilizes <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">institutional discrimination<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the use of social institutions to deny minority group members access to the benefits of society<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">institutional racism<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">societal patterns that produce negative treatment against groups of people based on their race<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, it can lead to an <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">apartheid<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">policies, regulations, and laws implemented by a government to keep radical and ethnic groups separate<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. While apartheids themselves cause health disparities to develop by affecting overall well-being and mental health of minority groups, it can take form by targeting specific aspects of life, like economic, education, and health outcomes. The latter case can specifically be referred to as \u2018medical apartheid.\u2019<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:278}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Although \u2018medical apartheid\u2019 has no formal international human rights law definition, it is commonly referred to as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/17441692.2023.2201612?scroll=top&amp;needAccess=true#d1e130\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">segregation and discrimination in health care<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Yet, this type of treatment can escalate to loss of bodily autonomy and result in systemic harm. These practices perpetuate inequality by denying certain groups access to quality care, subjecting them to unethical medical experimentation or withholding vital treatments \u2014 ultimately violating the fundamental human right to health. Once a conflict worsens beyond this level with intention, it can be considered a <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">genocide<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the systematic killing of one group based on differences in race, ethnicity, and religion<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. The systematic denial of health care to specific groups not only perpetuates social inequality but also normalizes the dehumanization of these populations. As a result, they also erode social cohesion, foster distrust in institutions, and exacerbate divisions along racial, ethnic, and economic lines. Most notably, this includes the ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis in Palestine, which has been characterized by long-standing conflict and violence, particularly in Gaza and the West Bank due to <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">direct population transfer<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">when the dominant group makes a minority population leave a location by force<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. While the International Court of Justice (ICJ) has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/01\/26\/1227078791\/icj-israel-genocide-gaza-palestinians-south-africa\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">ruled that a genocide is plausible in Gaza<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and ordered Israel to ensure its forces do not commit any acts prohibited by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ihl-databases.icrc.org\/en\/ihl-treaties\/genocide-conv-1948\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Genocide Convention<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the term <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6334409\/is-whats-happening-gaza-genocide-experts\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cgenocide\u201d<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> continues to be debated among the public and scholars. Despite this, there is broad recognition of the humanitarian crisis and severe health implications facing Palestinian civilians with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/2024\/03\/21\/views-of-the-u-s-role-in-the-israel-hamas-war\/#support-for-providing-humanitarian-aid-in-gaza\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">50 percent of Americans saying they favor providing humanitarian aid<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. In order for Palestinians to receive medical treatment, they must go through an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6899026\/israel-palestine-medical-volunteers\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">exit-permit system administered by the Israeli government<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Structural factors like this create an environment where health disparities can foster but also become more challenging to address. With an increased <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.who.int\/gb\/ebwha\/pdf_files\/WHA77\/A77_12-en.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">lack of access to clean water, adequate nutrition, and basic sanitation<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, public health outcomes worsen and disproportionately affect children and the elderly, leading to the formation of health disparities among populations. Additionally, in the case of Palestinians, the ethnic and racial dimensions of this trauma are important. Being a member of an ethnic group that faces systemic discrimination and violence can intensify feelings of marginalization, hopelessness, and dehumanization.
