The U.S. is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visualcapitalist.com\/which-countries-have-universal-health-coverage\/\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">only country<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in the industrialized world without universal healthcare. The. Only. One. The map helps put this shocking reality into perspective. While the U.S. is amongst the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gfmag.com\/data\/richest-countries-in-the-world\/\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">richest countries<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in the world, its health system is not even in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/best-countries\/slideshows\/countries-with-the-most-well-developed-public-health-care-system?slide=12\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">top ten<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This doesn\u2019t mean that the U.S. lacks a <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">medical-industrial complex<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. The country has an expansive <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">multibillion-dollar enterprise consisting of doctors, hospitals, nursing homes, insurance companies, drug manufacturers, and hospital supply and equipment companies.<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> The U.S. spends <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/data-research\/statistics-trends-and-reports\/national-health-expenditure-data\/historical#:~:text=The%20data%20are%20presented%20by,spending%20accounted%20for%2017.6%20percent.\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">$14, 570 per person<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> or $4.9 trillion on health care. This is thousands of dollars more than spent in other countries around the world. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/library\/publications\/2024\/demo\/p60-284.html#:~:text=In%202023%2C%20most%20people%2C%2092.0,America%20Counts%20Story\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">92 percent<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of people have health insurance. Of that, 65 percent have private insurance, and 36 percent have public insurance. On the surface, these numbers sound good. The issue is that the U.S. system does not provide enough coverage at an affordable price.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Is this because Americans are that much sicker than people in other countries? That doesn\u2019t make sense. Why would a country with a thriving medical industrial complex have sicker citizens? If we set aside a discussion on how the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theflaw.org\/articles\/corporate-capture-of-the-american-diet\/\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">American food industry<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> negatively impacts health, that leads us to consider other things that affect healthcare, namely the cost of medications and treatments. Consider these costs in the various industrialized nations:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/health-costs\/report\/price-regulation-global-budgets-and-spending-targets-a-road-map-to-reduce-health-care-spending-and-improve-affordability\/#:~:text=We%20review%20three%20major%20approaches,including%20examples%20currently%20in%20practice.\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">regulating or capping prices<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to maintain affordability for citizens. In the U.S.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> pharmaceutical manufacturers and insurance companies negotiate prices. The result is that when you go to pick up a prescription, the price might be $135 for you, but only $35 for the person standing next to you because you have different insurance companies that negotiate radically different out-of-pocket prices. And the person without insurance? That poor soul is paying the full price of $500 for the same prescription. In fact, insurance companies and pharmacies have been accused of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/scl\/fi\/kk52mzi3ze3jkniykiqti\/Healthcare-Blog-1-14-25.docx?dl=0&amp;rlkey=rlqedax0drfwlpapv80gbo0sj&amp;st=pjr11fb7\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">overcharging American<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> patients by as much as 1000 percent.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It is worth mentioning that beginning in 2026, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/medicare\/issue-brief\/faqs-about-the-inflation-reduction-acts-medicare-drug-price-negotiation-program\/#:~:text=The%20Inflation%20Reduction%20Act%20of,D%20drugs%20in%20August%202024.\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Inflation Reduction Act of 2022<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> was supposed to allow the U.S. government to negotiate certain drug prices for citizens on <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Medicare<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a government program established in 1965 funding healthcare for people over 65, people with disabilities, and people receiving long-term treatment with dialysis.<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> While the scope of this act was limited, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/today.yougov.com\/health\/articles\/43152-americans-support-gov-negotiation-drug-prices\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">62 percent of Americans<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> polled were in favor of the federal government playing a role in the negotiation of drug prices. Through <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2025\/01\/20\/trump-executive-orders-health-care-drug-pricing-aca-covid-gender-discrimination\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">executive orders<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, President Trump overturned the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 on January 20, 2025. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Prices aside, whether medical treatment is approved in the U.S. is often out of the hands of humans. Historically, a patient with an issue would see their doctor who would recommend a course of action and alert or petition the insurance company before being approved for treatment by insurance company employees. Increasingly, American insurance companies are now using artificial intelligence (AI) to determine who can and cannot receive treatment. Seemingly, the goal of this technology is to save money. The problem is that in some instances the AI algorithm has been accused of rejecting requests for treatment that doctors deem medically necessary.\u00a0 UnitedHealth is facing a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/unitedhealth-lawsuit-ai-deny-claims-medicare-advantage-health-insurance-denials\/\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lawsuit<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> over its use of AI for this very reason. Additionally, there is concern that AI may not be providing accurate information. Known as \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clinicaltrialsarena.com\/news\/hallucinations-in-ai-generated-medical-summaries-remain-a-grave-concern\/\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">AI hallucination<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u201d it is the frightening fact that sometimes the AI tools used in hospitals make things up and put random notes in people&#8217;s medical records. Europe has taken steps to address the role of AI in medicine by introducing the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41746-024-01116-6#:~:text=On%2013%20March%202024%2C%20the,in%20the%20EU%20and%20beyond.\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">EU AI Act<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in March 2024. The American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) introduced some regulations back in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.news-medical.net\/news\/20241016\/FDA-strengthens-AI-regulation-to-ensure-patient-safety-and-innovation-in-healthcare.aspx\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1995<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> when AI was first introduced, but nothing substantive exists on the federal level. To combat the slow response of the U.S. government to this issue, increasingly, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/08\/12\/states-regulate-ai-health-care\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">U.S. states<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> are introducing their own laws to deal with AI in healthcare.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-110533 size-thumbnail\" src=\"http:\/\/uitac.com\/inthenewsblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2025\/01\/Elon_Musk_Brazil_2022-150x150.png\" alt=\"Portrait of Elon Musk. \" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>The wild west nature of the American medical system is best understood by considering a 2024 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/elon-musk-asked-people-upload-200527137.html?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAJEkvIosJaNiwmX1uKLLSIYcxL3ebDmiE4sxO8ZMpGZeUQU2jJFg1FzUekEDw5dFgm-gJ1gN-etSFtcQZuzeQgRBfioB7WYD28PTjnvWZN6WlZiso2J-Rpz-C4C_0oR41GoQ-HgKzxzAz10ETqO6WheeOMHRWDUjehLuZcpjHx8P\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tweet<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> from \u201cX\u201d owner Elon Musk. To help educate his AI platform \u201cGrok,\u201d Musk asked users of his social media platform to \u201cTry submitting x-ray, PET, MRI or other medical images to Grok for analysis\u2026\u201d That Grok isn\u2019t ready for primetime was highlighted by the fact that it mistook a breast cyst for testicles and tuberculosis for a herniated disk. In addition to posting medical records on \u201cX\u201d being a frightening violation of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/hipaa\/for-professionals\/privacy\/index.html#:~:text=The%20HIPAA%20Privacy%20Rule%20establishes,160%2C%20162%2C%20and%20164.\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">federal patient privacy laws<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, this stunt highlighted why universal health<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">care matters.
