\"ARacial<\/span> discrimination<\/span> remains<\/span> a<\/span> deeply<\/span> rooted<\/span> issue<\/span> in<\/span> the<\/span> United<\/span> States,<\/span> and<\/span> its<\/span> effects extend far beyond social and economic spheres, reaching into the very heart of the <\/span>healthcare<\/span> system<\/span> \u2014<\/span> a system expected to serve everyone with <\/span>an equitable<\/span> level of care.<\/span> Although this expectation exists, health disparities are far too common<\/span> among<\/span> racial minority groups, both in and outside of the United States. <\/span>Researchers found that racism, <\/span><\/span>in Europe<\/span><\/span><\/a>, reinforces inequities in healthcare access and quality for racialized migrants. Researchers also found that various minority groups<\/span> <\/span>in South Africa<\/span><\/span><\/a> face ethnic health disparities in the post-apartheid era. <\/span>Despite<\/span> advances<\/span> in<\/span> medical<\/span> science within the United States,<\/span> disparities<\/span> in<\/span> healthcare<\/span> experiences,<\/span> treatment, and health outcomes continue to negatively affect African American, Hispanic, and other marginalized communities at disproportionate rates. <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

For generations, minority communities have expressed distrust in the U.S. healthcare system<\/span> due<\/span> to experiences <\/span>of<\/span> discrimination<\/span> and<\/span> biased<\/span> care.<\/span> Researchers<\/span> have<\/span> found<\/span> that experiences of discrimination in the healthcare system appear <\/span>more common<\/span> than previously recognized and deserve considerable attention. <\/span>Researchers <\/span>indicate<\/span> that<\/span> \u201c<\/span>[c]<\/span>ompared<\/span> with non-Hispanic White respondents, higher proportions of Hispanic respondents, non-Hispanic Black respondents, and non-Hispanic respondents with other <\/span>racial\/ethnic<\/span> identities<\/span> <\/span>reported experiences of discrimination<\/span><\/span><\/a>.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Nong and colleagues<\/span><\/span><\/a> also found that 22.9<\/span> percent<\/span> of Hispanic respondents, 22.8<\/span> percent<\/span> of non-Hispanic Black respondents, and 23.4<\/span> percent<\/span> of non-Hispanic respondents with other racial\/ethnic<\/span> identities<\/span> reported<\/span> experiences<\/span> of<\/span> racial<\/span> discrimination<\/span> compared<\/span> to<\/span> only<\/span> 20.3<\/span> percent<\/span> of non-Hispanic White respondents. <\/span>Additionally, <\/span><\/span>their<\/span><\/span><\/a> five <\/span>m<\/span>ost commonly reported<\/span> types of discrimination, race\/ethnicity; educational or income level; <\/span>weight; <\/span>sex; <\/span>and<\/span> age,<\/span> 17.2 percent<\/span> of<\/span> reported<\/span> experiences of <\/span>discrimination<\/span> were<\/span> based<\/span> on<\/span> race<\/span> and\/or<\/span> ethnicity.<\/span> <\/span>They<\/span><\/span><\/a> also found that 20.3<\/span> percent<\/span> of individuals who experienced racial discrimination<\/span> in healthcare settings<\/span> experienced it four or more times.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Historical trends of unethical practices<\/span>\u200b<\/span>,<\/span>\u200b<\/span><\/span> within the U.S. healthcare system<\/span>\u200b<\/span>\u200b<\/span><\/span> also contribute to the distrust of the healthcare system within minority communities. One example of unethical practices within the healthcare system is California\u2019s eugenics practices.<\/span>\u200b<\/span> \u200b<\/span><\/span>Although eugenics had been practiced worldwide, the purpose of eugenics within the U.S. was to inhibit specific communities from reproducing. While California\u2019s sterilization program was officially dismantled in 1979, the state possessed a long history of sterilization dating back to the early twentieth century. The <\/span>\u200b<\/span>definition of eugenics<\/span><\/a>\u200b<\/span><\/span> is described as \u201cgood birth,\u201d which<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>suggests a suitable goal for all prospective parents, yet its historical connotations tie the practice to appalling policies, including forced sterilizations. often through surgical procedures like hysterectomies, tubal ligation, or vasectomies. Many of these practices were performed particularly on minority communities in state hospitals or correctional facilities. <\/span>\u200b<\/span>Researchers<\/span><\/a>\u200b<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>found that between 1920 and 1945, eugenic sterilization practices were disproportionately applied to Latinx patients, particularly Latina women and girls. <\/span><\/p>\n

\"A<\/span><\/p>\n

Another<\/span> example<\/span> of<\/span> unethical<\/span> medical practices<\/span> within the <\/span>U.S.<\/span> is the Tuskegee Syphilis Study. In 1932, the small town of Tuskegee<\/span> was<\/span> one<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> poorest<\/span> towns<\/span> in<\/span> the<\/span> U.S.<\/span>,<\/span> and<\/span> it<\/span> was<\/span> also<\/span> primarily<\/span> comprised<\/span> of African Americans. <\/span><\/span>The Tuskegee Study<\/span><\/span><\/a> was conducted from 1932 to 1972 and involved <\/span>researchers <\/span>monitoring<\/span> the progression of syphilis through 399 poor, African American males. Treatment, which became available just 11 years after the initiation of the study, was withheld from the <\/span>participants for the duration of the study. An <\/span>additional<\/span> 201 non-syphilitic, poor, African American men were also unknowingly involved in the study as control subjects. During this study, researchers lied to both healthy and sick patients about their conditions, leading them to<\/span> believe<\/span> they<\/span> were<\/span> receiving<\/span> treatments<\/span> for<\/span> \u201cbad<\/span> blood<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span> when<\/span> in<\/span> fact<\/span> they<\/span> were<\/span> only<\/span> receiving painful spinal taps to check for the presence of neural syphilis as part of the study.<\/span><\/span> Ultimately, this resulted in<\/span> some<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> infected<\/span> patients<\/span> dying<\/span> from<\/span> the<\/span> disease,<\/span> when,<\/span> in<\/span> the<\/span> case<\/span> of<\/span> later deaths, treatments were available that may have prevented this outcome.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

As a result of the above<\/span>–<\/span>mentioned factors, as well as many other influencing factors, minority populations suffer disproportionately higher rates of negative health conditions, including<\/span> chronic<\/span> illnesses,<\/span> preventable<\/span> diseases,<\/span> and<\/span> untreated<\/span> conditions.<\/span> <\/span>According to researchers<\/span><\/span><\/a>, \u201c<\/span>[f]<\/span>or racial and ethnic minorities in the United States, health disparities take on many forms, including higher rates of chronic disease and premature death compared to the rates among whites<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span> Obesity<\/span>,<\/span> a<\/span> condition<\/span> that<\/span> has<\/span> many<\/span> associated<\/span> chronic<\/span> diseases<\/span> and<\/span> debilitating<\/span> conditions,<\/span> also largely affects minority communities. This has major implications for the quality of life and wellbeing<\/span> for<\/span> these<\/span> population<\/span> groups<\/span> and<\/span> their<\/span> families.<\/span> <\/span>Research found<\/span><\/span><\/a> that<\/span> from<\/span> 2011<\/span> to<\/span> 2014, Hispanic children and adolescents ages 2 to 19 had the highest prevalence of obesity in the United States. Heart disease and cancer are the leading causes of death across race, ethnicity, and gender. <\/span><\/span>Research also found<\/span><\/span><\/a> that in 2010, African Americans were 30<\/span> percent<\/span> more likely than Whites to die prematurely from heart disease and that <\/span>nearly 44<\/span> percent<\/span> of African American men and 48<\/span> percent<\/span> of African American women <\/span>possessed<\/span> some form of cardiovascular disease. <\/span><\/span>Additionally, researchers discovered<\/span><\/span><\/a> that African American women were more likely to die from <\/span>cancer compared to their White counterparts. <\/span>Even<\/span> the<\/span> overall<\/span> life<\/span> expectancy<\/span> has<\/span> disproportionate<\/span> negative <\/span>effects<\/span> on<\/span> minority<\/span> communities.<\/span> <\/span>Based<\/span> on<\/span> research<\/span> conducted in 2016<\/span><\/span><\/a>, the life expectancy of African American women, in 2012, was 78.4 years of age compared to <\/span>81.2 years of age for non-Hispanic White women. <\/span><\/span> On the other hand, the life expectancy of African American men was 72.3 years of age compared to 76.5 years of age for non-Hispanic White men. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"A\u200b<\/span>\u200b<\/span>\u200b<\/span><\/span>\u200b<\/span>\u200b<\/span><\/span>\u200b<\/span>\u200b<\/span><\/span>\u200b<\/span>\u200b<\/span><\/span>\u200b<\/span>\u200b<\/span><\/span>The ongoing experiences of racial discrimination in the U.S. healthcare system, along with a long history of unethical medical practices and systemic neglect, reveal a deeply rooted pattern of injustice that continues to harm minority communities. From the history of unethical medical practices to the present-day disparities in patient diagnoses and treatment, communities of color have consistently faced barriers to equitable institutionalized racism, implicit bias, and a medical system that has too often devalued the lives and voices of African American, Hispanic, and other marginalized groups. As a result, these populations continue to suffer from worse health outcomes, higher rates of chronic illnesses, and lower life expectancy. The ongoing experiences of racial discrimination in the United States healthcare system, along with a long history of unethical medical practices and systemic neglect, reveal a deeply rooted pattern of injustice that continues to harm minority communities. From the history of unethical medical practices to the present-day disparities in patient diagnoses and treatment, communities of color have consistently faced barriers to equitable institutionalized racism, implicit bias, and a medical system that has too often devalued the lives and voices of African American, Hispanic, and other marginalized groups.
