It\u2019s no lie that the rates of mental illness have been rising, especially when looking at current events like growing rates of divorce, political environments, natural disasters, and economic hardships \u2014 it seems the list never ends. A report by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/news\/press\/releases\/stress\/2023\/collective-trauma-recovery\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">American Psychological Associatio<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">n (APA)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> has indicated an increase in chronic mental illnesses from 18 to 44 years of age.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Perhaps when seeing the increase in these numbers we can make an inference as to why service, emotional support, and therapy animal numbers have also been increasing. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/06\/18\/us\/emotional-support-animal.html\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">article<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> by <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">New York Times<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> stated, the National Service Animal Registry in 2011 had 2,400 registered service and emotional support animals, and now the number has jumped to over 200,000. From guide dogs depicted in paintings in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doglawreporter-bay-net.blogspot.com\/2010\/07\/guide-dog-in-pompeian-fresco.html\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Pompeii<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> recorded in 1516 in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doglawreporter.blogspot.com\/2010\/09\/guide-dog-in-chinese-scroll-from-1516.html\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">China<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, as well as in 1785 in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/museelouisbraille.com\/en\/hauy-le-precurseur\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">France<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> for a school for the blind, service animals have seemingly been present throughout history. Despite the presence of service dogs throughout time, it seems that the mass training of service animals began after World War I. This training started with one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gsdcouncilaustralia.org\/1st-guide-dog\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">doctor<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, Gerhard Stalling, working with soldiers who were blinded by gas on the front lines<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. The doctor happened to leave his dog with an injured patient and was able to see the immediate effects on the patient seeing them interact with each other. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Service animal training centers continued to spread from Europe to the U.S.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">and even further, each center dedicated to providing the best service animals.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335557856&quot;:16777215}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The definition of a service animal by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/adata.org\/guide\/service-animals-and-emotional-support-animals\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Americans with Disabilities Act<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> (ADA) passed in the 1990s. It is any dog<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability, including a physical, sensory, psychiatric, intellectual, or other mental disability. Service animals are not required to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ada.gov\/topics\/service-animals\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">certified<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> on a specific program, do not need an ID that identifies the dog as a service animal, and are not an emotional support animal as emotional support is not related to a disability. Though some service animals are not required to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/seizurealertgiants\/products\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">wear<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> special gear, programs train animals with vests to alert the dog that it is \u201cwork time.\u201d Even if you see a cute dog out in public with a service vest, respect their workspace and allow them to do their job. From being allowed accommodations and entrance into public facilities to being with their handler at their workplace, service animals cannot be deferred from any type of housing, can be with their handler in K\u201312 educational settings, and cannot be denied access to transportation, including air travel. It is important to remember that though service animals <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.certapet.com\/emotional-support-animal\/?\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">provide <\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">companionship,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> they are more than just a dog; they are workers who further provide freedom even life-saving interventions to those who need it.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"none\">Emotional Support Animal (ESA) and Therapy Animals<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"none\">Emotional Support Animal<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/adata.org\/service-animal-resource-hub\/differences\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> (HUD), an emotional support animal (ESA) is any animal that provides emotional support, alleviating one or more symptoms or effects of a person&#8217;s disability. Unlike service animals who preform specific tasks, there is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.certapet.com\/emotional-support-animal\/?\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">no required training<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> for ESAs. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/littleangelsservicedogs.org\/disabilities-served\/psychiatric-service-dogs\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">P<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/littleangelsservicedogs.org\/disabilities-served\/psychiatric-service-dogs\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">sychiatric service animals<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> are specifically trained to pick up on signals from anxiety attacks <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">before <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">they start. While ESAs are helpful, they ultimately do the tasks dogs were instinctively born to do: be a companion, show loyalty to their owners, or perhaps, even cuddle on demand.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">ESAs are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.certapet.com\/emotional-support-animal\/?\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">prescribed<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> with an official document called an emotional support letter by a mental health professional as part of a treatment plan for an individual to support emotional, mental, and physical parts of everyday life. This prescription is recognized by federal law and gives the individual\u2019s ESA official recognition as a need for their particular condition. ESAs are also protected under some laws like service animals that require employers or landlords to accept ESAs and make some other accommodations for individuals.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"none\">Therapy Animals<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/adata.org\/service-animal-resource-hub\/differences#:~:text=Therapy%20animals%20provide%20people%20with,%2C%20emotional%2C%20or%20cognitive%20functioning.\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">definition<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> according to the ADA is animals who provide people with healing contact, typically in an institutional or clinical setting, to improve their physical, social, emotional, or cognitive functioning. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/animal-therapy#how-it-works\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Medical News Today<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, doctors use animals in treatment plans of certain individuals to help provide comfort or increase movement and motor skills, develop social and behavior skills, and increase motivation. However, some negative results stated that though there is an increase in the use of service animals in society, there is also an increase in doubt with the people using service animals and \u201ctaking advantage of the system.\u201d Some even answering that landlords \u201cshould be able to refuse service dogs\u201d despite being medically necessary.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">There is even some negative perception online regarding service animals with videos being posted on TikTok, which has further been taken to Reddit, with titles being \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/service_dogs\/comments\/1e912sq\/the_service_dog_community_is_toxic\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">The service dog community is toxic<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u201d \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/service_dogs\/comments\/15wpwkd\/i_am_annoyed_with_the_service_dog_tiktok_community\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">I am annoyed with the service dog tiktok community<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u201d or \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/service_dogs\/comments\/14li72o\/whats_up_with_all_the_tiktoks_about_not_real\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">What\u2019s up with all the tiktok\u2019s about \u201cnot real\u201d service dogs?<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201d These videos in question highlight both negative public perceptions and even the discord between others in the \u201cservice dog community,\u201d where people call out \u201cunethical\u201d handlers, service dog owners being asked for proof for the necessity of the service dog when entering any facility, or handlers criticizing other handlers for supposed malpractice and bad treatment of service animals.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"none\">Emotional Support Animal<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">D<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ue to current events, there has been an increase in mental health problems and mental health awareness. A variety of organizations, such as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/02-03-2022-covid-19-pandemic-triggers-25-increase-in-prevalence-of-anxiety-and-depression-worldwide\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">World Health Organization<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> (WHO) provided a variety of mental health awareness campaigns, which led to people being more aware of their problems. A report by <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ESA Pet<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> stated that \u201cESA registrations increased by 50 percent in the past five years. 66 percent of ESA owners acquired their animals after March 2020.\u201d With higher requests, there is higher awareness of what ESAs can do as a coping method for helping combat mental illness.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"none\">Conclusion<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p data-ccp-border-bottom=\"0px none #000000\" data-ccp-padding-bottom=\"0px\" data-ccp-border-between=\"0px none #000000\" data-ccp-padding-between=\"0px\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">It is vital to note the importance of service animals for individuals to navigate life. However, one of the caveats of service animals is the upfront costs it takes to afford one \u2014 the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodrx.com\/health-topic\/disability\/how-much-does-a-service-dog-cost\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">cost<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> of a service dog can range from $15,000 to $50,000. Furthermore, after the upfront costs, veterinary visits, food and other expenses can range from $500 to $10,000 a year. Sadly, many individuals who need a service animal simply cannot afford it.
