Do you or your family members own a coffee mug that says<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> \u201cMy dog rescued me,\u201d \u201cBest dog parent,\u201d or \u201cI paws for doggy snuggles\u201d? Does your campus have emotional support dogs? And is your family dog walker on speed dial? Statistically speaking, you should answer \u201cyes\u201d to at least one of these questions. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These and countless other market nods to dogs are evidence of a relatively new family form: the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/canine-corner\/202311\/could-dogs-be-legally-considered-members-of-the-family\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">multi-species family<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. And demographers, family sociologists, and dog lovers alike are chewing on what this means for the future of families.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">To be fair, we\u2019ve been companionate with dogs for a very long time. For centuries, people have acknowledged and appreciated the bidirectionality of the dog-human relationship. But it seems we\u2019ve now evolved to humanizing dogs. Simply put, they are one of us. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There are now more dogs than children in the U.S. As of 2023, approximately <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/library\/stories\/2024\/11\/family-households.html\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">33 million<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> households have children under 18, whereas at least <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/canine-corner\/202311\/could-dogs-be-legally-considered-members-of-the-family\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">59.8 million households have dogs<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. (It should be noted that many became dog owners during the COVID pandemic<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> And dogs are big business as well. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">According to the\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanpetproducts.org\/press_industrytrends.asp\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">American Pet Products Association<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, we are now collectively spending $123.6 billion on our furry friends.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">Finally, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2023\/07\/07\/about-half-us-of-pet-owners-say-their-pets-are-as-much-a-part-of-their-family-as-a-human-member\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">94%<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> of us agree that dogs are full-fledged family members.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Generationally speaking, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/advisor\/pet-insurance\/pet-ownership-statistics\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Millennials<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> are most likely to have a dog. They are also the mostly likely to budget and spend on dogs, followed by Gen X\u2019ers. On average, Millennials spend anywhere from $2,000 to $5,000 annually on their dogs. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.akc.org\/expert-advice\/lifestyle\/how-much-spend-on-dog-in-lifetime\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Spending<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> is largely dependent upon a dog\u2019s age, breed, and overall health. To sociologists, Millennials represent an interesting convergence of economics, opportunity structures, and competing emotions. Millennial dog ownership is an embodiment of this mix.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The rise in dog ownership is negatively correlated with the declining birth rate in the U.S. and around the world. The U<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.S.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> birthrate is now <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/advisor\/pet-insurance\/pet-ownership-statistics\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">1.6<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, meaning that each woman is expected to have 1.6 children over her lifetime. Demographers tell us that we need a birthrate of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/7834459\/#:~:text=In%20developed%20countries%2C%20replacement%20level,of%202.1%20children%20per%20woman.\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">2.1<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> for our population to maintain itself (not accounting for things like immigration). The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/7834459\/#:~:text=In%20developed%20countries%2C%20replacement%20level,of%202.1%20children%20per%20woman.\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">steepest decline<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> in births has been among women ages 20<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2013<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">39, so Millennials are central to this drop-off. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The deteriorating birth rate speaks to increased economic opportunities for women, lackluster views on marriage, inflation, and perhaps a fondness for children, but an ambivalence regarding parenting. This pointedly Millennial climate has brought about a human \u201crelationship paws.\u201d Dogs are loyally filling in the emotional gaps. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Sociologists have suggested that dogs are the \u201cnew\u201d or \u201csurrogate\u201d children. They provide unwavering companionship and support, but are a fraction of the cost. Many dogs adapt easily to work schedules. They are also loyal, agreeable, emotionally available, and committed. And while they are most prevalent in Millennial single and married-without-children stories, they are also in nuclear families, single-parent families, widow and widower households, and families of affinity. They have snuggled their way from best-friend status to a family-making agent. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dogs are also becoming more alpha as family decision drivers. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/7834459\/#:~:text=In%20developed%20countries%2C%20replacement%20level,of%202.1%20children%20per%20woman.\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Andrea Laurent-Simpson<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> of Southern Methodist University notes that dogs in families \u201chave a profound impact on things like fertility considerations, the parent-child relationship, family finances, involvement of extended family members, and the household structure itself.&#8221; <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The late Pope Francis recognized this. Although he was a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/7834459\/#:~:text=In%20developed%20countries%2C%20replacement%20level,of%202.1%20children%20per%20woman.\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">dog lover<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, the pope spoke about his concerns regarding dogs as surrogate children. In 2022, he <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/7834459\/#:~:text=In%20developed%20countries%2C%20replacement%20level,of%202.1%20children%20per%20woman.\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">strongly connected<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> dogs to the diminishing birth rate, noting that this was \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a form of selfishness.&#8221; Continuing on, he said, &#8220;We see that some people do not want to have a child. Sometimes they have one, and that&#8217;s it, but they have dogs and cats that take the place of children.\u201d This, he declared, &#8220;is a denial of fatherhood and motherhood and diminishes us, takes away our humanity.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Relatedly, in 2023, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Terry Gou, a candidate for the Taiwanese presidency, explicitly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/7834459\/#:~:text=In%20developed%20countries%2C%20replacement%20level,of%202.1%20children%20per%20woman.\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">incentivized<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> the dog-parenthood connection. The Taiwanese government sounded the alarm on Taiwan\u2019s 1.11 birthrate. They currently offer government payments for having children. But Gou saw a creative <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> albeit perplexing <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> approach to the birthrate-dog conundrum. He proposed giving people a free dog if they had a child. While the idea was novel, sociologists and demographers say it would not have been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/populationconnection.org\/article\/you-cant-even-pay-people-to-have-more-kids\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">enough<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> to incentivize biological parenthood.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">And if dogs are now full-fledged children, they are also becoming a part of property and well-being considerations in divorce. In 2023, a Colombian court recognized <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/populationconnection.org\/article\/you-cant-even-pay-people-to-have-more-kids\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Simona<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> the dog as a legal \u201cdaughter,\u201d and allowed a former husband visitation rights. In 2024, the Supreme Court of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/populationconnection.org\/article\/you-cant-even-pay-people-to-have-more-kids\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">British Columbia<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> awarded shared pup custody in a divorce case. And while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/populationconnection.org\/article\/you-cant-even-pay-people-to-have-more-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">U.S.<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> divorce courts have typically considered dogs as personal property, many state courts are now treating dogs like biological children, where divorcing families must consider custody, visitation, and alimony payments.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The dogs-as-family story illustrates how the sociological imagination takes us beyond ourselves, where we can consider environments, physical and emotional needs, conversations, and adaptations well beyond the confines of our homes. However, dogs also speak to our deeply personal lived experiences where they have seamlessly integrated. Careful consideration of dogs helps us to explore ways in which \u201cfamily\u201d definitions are changing to illustrate a non-linear navigation of structure, culture, emotions, and reality.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">So, the next time you enjoy a puppy pet or notice a \u201cdog lover\u201d mug or t-shirt, remember this dogs-as-humanity picture.
